I Love Katy Perry’s New Video So Much I Wrote A Blog About It.

It’s no secret that I’m mildly obsessed with Katy Perry.  Ever since she revealed her irreverent and self-depricating sense of humor in the video for Last Friday Night, I felt like we were best friends that just didn’t know each other yet. Last week she released a new video for This Is How We Do directed by Joel Kefali (who’s directed videos for Lorde and The Naked and Famous, among others).

I’ve always thought the song was catchy, and of course Katy looks awesome. But what really captivated me about the video was the stellar art direction and minimalist set design. The aesthetic reminds me of one of my favorite illustration/image studios Serial Cut, based in Madrid.

Here are a few reasons why this is one of my favorite music videos to come out this year:

They could have just shot this scene by an actual pool. But this is way cleaner and still gets the point across. In fact, the whole video relies on minimal sets and killer props to convey a place. Also, all the male dancers are dressed like Pee Wee Herman.

  • It’s been almost a year since @danatrixieflynn informed me that I would be teaching classes at the @churchofyoganola. I say “informed” because it was in no way posed as a question or an offer, it was more like being pushed off a ledge. A ledge I spent close to 15 years dancing around and exploring and readying myself for... and yet. I was still terrified of the jump.
After moving to NOLA I thought I had found solace from my dance with the ledge. Ha.
I have always been a methodical creature of habit. Someone who takes leaps that look crazy from the outside, but that I have exhaustively explored and prepared for. Leaps I know I can take without falling on my face. Without looking like a fool.
Well if this past year has taught me anything, it’s that sometimes there is no way around looking like a fool, or failing. Sometimes you just have to jump. Or in my case, the universe has to guide you to that person who is going to push you (out of pure love, of course). 😜
You flail, and you struggle and it’s awkward. People like what you offer up and people dislike what you offer up. You pace around for hours and obsessively practice and fret only to forget it all the second the spotlight is on you, despite knowing your shit. You fail. You learn. And through this process you build up muscles that you didn’t know you even had, and that aren’t always of the physical variety.
Even though I haven’t felt so awkward or vulnerable since middle school as when teaching this past year, it has not once crossed my mind that I should give up. I haven’t tried to convince myself that I would be much happier and at peace if I just quit—which I am very good at!!—because I have never been so sure that I’m meant to do something as I am this.
If you’re dancing with a ledge, big or small, and waiting on perfection.. consider the possibility—actually, the likelihood—that perfection will never come. That you’re going to have to jump. Or be pushed. And that you *will* look like a fool. And that. Is the messy, human, painful process of ideas and hopes and dreams... becoming reality.
This, is my living prayer.
